Ombudsman Fiona Crean is delighted to present the City of Toronto’s first-ever Ombudsman Public Service Award to five city staff who provided residents with outstanding assistance in resolving their complaints about city services. The winners are being honoured this morning during a ceremony at Toronto City Hall.

In her annual report released today, the Ombudsman for the City of Toronto called on the City to fix an oversight remaining from the creation of the City of Toronto Act six years ago. “One of the changes that was considered but never implemented was to give the new city its own Public Service Act,” says Fiona Crean. “This would have set in law the rules that govern the actions of public servants, and make them clear to councillors and the public.”

The Ombudsman for the City of Toronto says the City has provided unfair and improperly discriminatory service to a resident with dementia. In an investigative report released today called, A Duty to Care, Fiona Crean also reports she could find no policies at the City of Toronto that ensure people with diminished capacity can understand notices and orders that are issued from City Hall.

In a sweeping review of the City’s handling of a resident’s eight-year sewage problem, Toronto’s Ombudsman, Fiona Crean found that the City have unreasonably and unjustly delayed finding and implementing a solution for a project they took responsibility for.
